Greater Accra Tennis Association Elects New Executives, Marking a Major Turning Point for Regional Tennis Development
The Greater Accra Tennis Association (GATA) has officially inaugurated a new leadership team following a decisive election held on Friday 21st November 2025, at the historic Ghana Tennis Club in Adabraka. The congress brought together representatives from the 39 recognised tennis clubs under the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), each entitled to two voting executives. Although the overall turnout was average, the event still succeeded in bringing together a strong and diverse representation of the regional tennis community.
This election marks the end of GATA’s extended period under an interim executive board—a temporary arrangement in place since 2020. Many stakeholders and clubs had long advocated for renewed, stable leadership to guide the region through its expanding participation base, increased tournaments, and rising expectations for developmental structure.
While turnout levels were moderate, the atmosphere remained charged with anticipation. Delegates emphasised that the average attendance did not diminish the significance of the moment: the tennis community recognised the need for solidified leadership and a clear strategic path forward.
Clubs expressed that the formation of a permanent executive board is essential to addressing persistent concerns—ranging from court maintenance and junior development to improving tournament consistency and strengthening communication across Greater Accra’s busy tennis landscape.
Seven candidates contested for four major leadership positions, resulting in a smooth and transparent electoral process.
Election Results and Profiles of the Newly Elected Executives
President – Dr. Bethel Kwansa-Bentum (Legon Tennis Club)
Dr. Bethel Kwansa-Bentum emerged victorious over Cyril Gadegbeku, CEO of 360 Engineering and Surveys. A respected figure within the Legon Tennis Club and broader tennis community, Dr. Bethel is known for his professional discipline, leadership experience, and developmental focus. His presidency is expected to emphasise governance reform, accountability, and sustainable growth across tennis clubs in the region.
Vice President – Ruweida Lamptey (RMU Tennis Club; CEO, TennisChic)
Running unopposed, Ruweida Lamptey secured the Vice Presidential seat. She is widely respected for her advocacy for women’s tennis and youth involvement, and her brand, TennisChic, has become a staple in tennis communities across Ghana. Her mandate includes strengthening engagement across clubs and driving visibility for tennis at grassroots levels.
Secretary – Anthony Adjetey Adjei (Achimota Tennis Club)
Anthony Adjetey Adjei won the Secretary position after a competitive contest against outgoing interim secretary, Philip Plange. Anthony is known for his organisational competence and active involvement in the Achimota Tennis Club. His role will be central to modernising communication, documentation, and administrative efficiency within GATA.
Treasurer – Judith Oforiwaa Afari (MacCarthy Hills Tennis Club)
Judith Oforiwaa Afari emerged as Treasurer after facing competition from Seth Djani Taiwah Kotey of the Accra Social Tennis Club. Judith’s reputation for financial discipline and accountability earned her the confidence of voters. She is expected to strengthen GATA’s financial management systems and fundraising strategies.
The new executive board assumes office at a crucial moment. Tennis in Greater Accra continues to grow, with more youth joining academies, increased inter-club tournaments, and rising interest from corporate partners. Stakeholders hope the new leadership will accelerate this momentum while resolving long-standing administrative gaps.
Despite the average turnout, the outcome of the election is widely seen as a major turning point for GATA and for tennis development in the region.
The newly elected executives are expected to release a detailed strategic roadmap in the coming weeks. Their leadership begins at a time of both opportunity and challenge, and the tennis community is optimistic that this new administration will unify clubs, modernise operations, and pave the way for the next generation of tennis talent in Greater Accra.
