Ghana thrives in Togo at the ITF/CAT 14 & under and 16 & under West & Central African Junior Individual and Teams Championships 2026

LOMÉ, TOGO – The future of Ghanaian tennis is burning bright. As the individual phase of the ITF/CAT West & Central African Junior Championships concluded this past Saturday, January 17th, Team Ghana emerged as a dominant force, securing multiple top-10 finishes and proving they are ready to challenge the region's traditional powerhouses.

From heart-stopping tiebreaks to clinical displays of skill, our junior athletes have set the stage for an explosive team competition.

The Boys' 14 & Under category provided some of the tournament's most electric moments. Joseph Tetteh (Tennis Foundation Ghana Academy / Sonrise Christian High) became the talk of the courts when he took a set off the tournament’s top seed, Cameroon’s O. Nkolo. In a nail-biting semifinal that went down to a final-set tiebreak, Tetteh showed world-class composure, eventually finishing a very respectable 4th place overall.

He wasn't alone in the rankings as Blessing Sewornu (Tennis Foundation Ghana Academy) showcased incredible depth, finishing 6th and Jefter Dowuona battled hard through a dense field to finish just outside the top 10.

In the Boys' 16 & Under division, the experience was evident. Jeffery Frimpong (PM Sports Foundation), coming off a high-profile stint at the African Youth Games in Angola, led the charge with a 5th place finish. Close behind him were compatriots Theodociouos Tagoe in 6th and Eric Torto in 9th, cementing Ghana’s reputation for producing consistent, high-level talent.

With the individual accolades settled, the focus shifts to the Team Championships. The stakes couldn't be higher, as teams vie for a spot in the prestigious Continental Finals.

The atmosphere in Lomé is described by our correspondents as "electric," with the Ghanaian contingent remaining in high spirits as they move into group play.

The Road Ahead

  • Boys U14 (Group B): Ghana faces off against Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.

  • Girls U14: A grueling Round Robin format against Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Cameroon.

  • Boys U16 (Group B): A "Group of Death" scenario against heavyweights NigeriaBurkina Faso, and the hosts, Togo.

  • Girls U16: A massive Round Robin challenge against Togo, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Liberia.

The transition from individual glory to team unity has been seamless. The coaching staff reports that the players are dialled in, recovered, and hungry to make their mark on the group events.

"Our prodigies are ready," says our team on the ground. "The goal is clear: qualify for the Continental Finals and show Africa what Ghana is made of."

Stay tuned for daily updates as the team competition progresses!
