Tennis Africa Invitational Wraps up In Accra

The Tennis Africa Junior Invitationals returned with a vengeance, breathing new life into a junior tennis scene that had been waiting for a spark. After a successful debut in Winneba in 2025, the tournament migrated to the historic clay of the Ghana Tennis Club in Adabraka for its second edition, proving that the heartbeat of Ghanaian tennis is stronger than ever.

One of the most praised aspects of the 6-day event was the round-robin playoff format. In a developmental stage where match experience is gold, this format ensured that no junior traveled to Adabraka for a single match. Every player was guaranteed multiple high-intensity battles, maximizing their growth and giving the fans a week-long festival of tennis.

This wasn’t just a tournament; it was a gathering of the Elite 16, the cream of the crop from the 10u to 14u categories. For many, it was a welcome sight for sore eyes, breaking a competitive drought that had lasted since January’s Sydney Katz Juniors.

The girls' 12u final was a masterclass in grit. Hellen Adjei (Korle-Bu Tennis Club) continues to be the kryptonite for her rival, Grace Naa Dromo Tetteh (Tennis Foundation Ghana). In a repeat of recent matchups, Adjei maintained her psychological edge, navigating the match with tactical precision to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory. This win marks Adjei’s third consecutive triumph over Tetteh, cementing her status as the current queen of the 12u circuit.

In the Girls 14u category, Comfort Nortey showed exactly why she is one of Sonrise Christian High School’s brightest athletic stars. Facing a relentless Whitney Orimoloye, Nortey was pushed to the limit in a grueling 7-5 opening set that tested every ounce of her endurance. Once she broke through, however, the floodgates opened. Nortey stormed through the second set 6-1, showcasing the elite conditioning and shot-making synonymous with the Tennis Foundation Ghana Academy.

The Boys 14u final went to Jefter Dowuona. National teammates Jefter Dowuona and Blessing Sewornu of the Tennis Foundation Ghana Academy went toe-to-toe, but it was Dowuona who found the extra gear. Displaying the clinical finishing that has seen him rise through the African rankings, Jefter secured a straight-sets victory to keep the trophy within the Dowuona family mantle.

As the dust settles on the Adabraka clay, one thing is certain: the future of Ghanaian tennis isn't just bright; it’s blinding. With the Tennis Africa Junior Invitationals now a staple on the calendar, these young stars finally have the consistent platform they need to reach for the stars.
