Nigeria’s Goodnews Eyinjuoluwa Aina has won the Girls’ Singles title at the J30 Accra – Tennis Foundation Ghana Open after Ghana’s Gwendolyn Duvor Klu was forced to retire in the final.
Aina was leading 7-5, 0-0 (15-0) when Klu retired, bringing the final to an early end at the National Tennis Centre in Accra.
The Nigerian produced a strong performance in the opening set, edging Klu 7-5 in a closely contested battle before the Ghanaian was unable to continue at the start of the second set.
The victory gives Aina the Girls’ Singles crown at the J30 Accra, part of the ITF World Tennis Junior Tour, which provides young players with valuable international ranking points and competitive experience.
Klu, who won the Girls’ Singles title during the first week of the tournament, was hoping to defend her crown on home soil after reaching another final.
Her run to the final had once again highlighted her growing reputation on the junior circuit, but Aina proved too strong on the day to claim the title.
The J30 Accra – Tennis Foundation Ghana Open is being organised by the Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) in collaboration with the Ghana Tennis Federation.
The tournament has brought together junior players from Ghana, Africa and beyond, giving young athletes the opportunity to compete for ITF ranking points and gain experience on the international stage.
Aina’s victory adds another international success to an event designed to provide a pathway for the next generation of tennis players without the need for them to travel extensively outside the region.
The J30 Accra forms part of a wider series of ITF World Tennis Junior Tour events being staged in Accra by Tennis Foundation Ghana.
